💚 How to Keep Your New Plant Happy: A Survival Guide for Beginners

Bringing home a new plant is exciting… until the questions start: Where do I put it? How often should I water it? Why is it turning yellow? If this sounds like you, you’re not alone.

At Jenisprouts, we believe plant care should feel joyful, not overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this simple survival guide to help you take care of your new green friend with confidence. 💚

Plant in window light

1. Know Your Light (and Your Plant’s Personality)

Not all plants love the sun. Some thrive in shade, others need bright indirect light. Here’s a quick way to match light and plant:

Tip: Place your plant 1–2 meters away from a window with filtered sunlight. Avoid direct midday sun unless it's a sun-loving variety.

2. Master the Watering Game

Most beginner mistakes happen at the watering can. Rule of thumb? Stick your finger 2cm into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water.

  • Too much water = yellow, mushy leaves
  • Too little = crisp, dry edges

Keep a watering routine, but don’t treat all plants the same! Sansevierias can go 2–3 weeks without water. Fittonias need more frequent attention and they will let you know.

Watering indoor plants

3. Consider Temperature and Humidity

Most indoor plants love temperatures between 65°F–80°F (18°C–26°C). But they also enjoy a bit of humidity!

  • Keep them away from AC vents, heaters, and cold drafts
  • Mist leaves or group plants together to boost humidity naturally

If you live in Florida, California or Texas, your indoor humidity may already be ideal for lush foliage like Calatheas or Peperomias.

4. Pick the Right Pot and Soil

Yes, pots matter! Drainage is essential to avoid root rot. Choose pots with drainage holes and well-draining indoor soil.

Bonus tip: Use a nursery pot inside a decorative one, so you can check roots and water easily.
